What travelers say:
Although Kyoto retains a deep sense of Japanese tradition, coffee shops are popping up everywhere, even more than teahouses.
There are many old-fashioned breakfast coffee shops with quite unique styles.
Coffee Matsunosuke has four chain stores throughout Japan, and Karasuma Oike is the flagship store.
Highlights:
Matsunosuke is a tea shop jointly opened by Kyoto-born chef Hirano Kenko and New York chef Cheryl Jean. It specializes in a variety of pies, scones and waffles, and is known as the No. 1 waffle shop in Kyoto.
Although it is a flagship store, it is located in a Japanese machiya house and is very small. There are ten tables in the room, which is quite compact. In order to have this breakfast, we got up early and caught up with the last empty table. The customers behind us were queuing up at the door.
Food guide:
Morning set menu is available from 8:00-10:00 in the morning for only 780 yen.
We ordered scones and waffles, with cream for the scones and maple syrup for the waffles.
Made to order, the pancakes are fried one by one, very fluffy, and the slightly burnt surface is sprinkled with white powdered sugar. Just looking at it makes me feel so happy. As soon as the knife was cut, the gentle aroma of the eggs spread out. Pour over the syrup and enjoy!
For an extra 200 yen, you can get an extra slice of bacon and a soft-boiled egg, which is satisfying.
The scones served here are also very authentic, reminding us of the surprise of eating hot scones for the first time in Yorktown, England.
Shopping guide:
I had a great time eating, and you can also take away various snacks. In the food cabinet at the checkout counter, there are three layers of full-pound desserts placed up and down, including apple pie, scones, French savory pies, and grandma cookies. The beautiful golden color exudes a reassuring sense of simplicity and happiness.
